THE TATA STRIVE - BAGCHI LIFESKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME IN ODISHA ITIs

What is it?

#CollaborativeCommitment at its best.
The Tata STRIVE Bagchi Lifeskills Development Programme, is a first-of-its-kind skilling programme that came about as a result of the coming together of the government & the industry. It is currently underway at the Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) located in the eastern Indian state of Odisha.

With the objective of...?

The objectives of the Life Skills Development Programme for Odisha ITIs are:
  • Enhance their employability; thus improving their performance during interviews, hence improving the overall placements in the ITIs
  • Provide life skills; which would not only help them in jobs but also in the future whatever career they may take up
  • Improve the self-confidence, self-esteem of students, enabling them to set goals for their life for a positive career movement
By introducing Tata STRIVE's Youth Development Modules (YDM) into the existing 'Employability Skills' programme developed by NCVT, the programme seeks to provide additional life skills training hours to ITI students.
Immersive sessions, combined with powerful behavioural change techniques, assist the process of inner transformation while at the same time, greatly enhancing employability.
Over time, concepts of importance such as, quality consciousness, building a sustainability mindset and design thinking skills, thus get imbibed by the students.
Thrice as Unique
Three aspects of the Tata STRIVE-Bagchi Programme make it unique, namely:

1.

Unique Vision

OSDA i.e. the Odisha Skill Development Authority's foresight into a partnership of this nature as well as allowing private sector efficiencies to meet initiatives of scale, speaks volumes of the government's intent & development-orientation.

2.

Unique Partnership

A momentous achievement for the programme has been the coming together of Ms. Susmita Bagchi, Tata (Tata STRIVE & Tata Trusts) & the government (DTET-Directorate of Technical Education & Training).
This partnership model, wherein - a High networth individual, government and the private sector work together to bring in resources and funding for the transformation of ITIs - has enriched the outcomes - profoundly.

3.

Unique - by Design

The programme is one for lifeskills, but goes far beyond that.
How we rolled-out
PhaseOne
As part of the first phase, the programme is being implemented in 10 Government ITIs, since December 2017. The districts covered include:
    Districts covered:
  • Kordah
  • Cuttack
  • Puri
  • Ganjam
  • Jajpur
  • Kendujhar
  • Mayurbhanj
  • Kandhamal
  • Nabarangapur and
  • Koraput.

who's who

Leading the transformation is a cadre of specially trained 'change leaders' (life skills faculty), who are making a difference to the lives of all stakeholders involved - each day, every day.
The programme has been designed by Tata STRIVE in collaboration with the Odisha Skill Development Authority, Department of Technical Education and Training (DTET), Odisha. ITIs have traditionally served the underprivileged sections of the society and hence this programme would also ensure that the most needy students get the required employable skills that would help them find better employment opportunities.
Sum & Substance
Our impact since inception
In the first year of implementation more than 6300 ITI students from 10 Government ITIs experienced the Tata STRIVE - Bagchi Programme. The total number of students expected to experience the Programme in two years, as part of the 1st phase is around 12000.
PhaseTwo
The 2nd phase of the programme is being launched and the programme is now being expanded to another set of 10 ITIs. This would additionally impact another 12000+ students in the next two years.

Our learner, Dhobe Saunta, from the DMC Trade at the Govt ITI,
Ambaguda
Dhobe Santa is from Damanjodi, Koraput District. Coming from an impoverished farmer family and being the eldest daughter among four siblings, she always had a lot of burden on her young shoulders. In order to get a job and help boost her family income, she enrolled in DMC ber course in Government ITI, Ambaguda. However, she was frequently absent from her classes as she had to travel from far and didn't have the means to afford rented accommodation close to the ITI. The initiation of Tata STRIVE Life Skills programme at ITI Ambaguda, helped Dhobe understand her goals, strengths and weaknesses and also inspired to find solutions to the intrinsic issues she was facing. She soon started staying with one of her friend in Ambaguda, close to the ITI and hence became one of the most regular and attentive student. Dhobe says, "I have always dreamt of succeeding in life by being gainfully employed and support my family financially. I wanted my brothers and younger sister to pursue higher studies and do well in their respective lives. But I was feeling dejected and demotivated due to the financial situation at my house. After attending the Tata STRIVEs YDM classes, I found inspiration from within. I was influenced to fight back and do well in my life and achieve my dreams.
